Thai Military Alleges Cambodia Breached Newly Agreed Ceasefire with Drone Incursions
Bangkok asserts Cambodian drones crossed into Thai territory shortly after a ceasefire, challenging efforts to stabilise their border after weeks of deadly clashes
Thailand’s military has accused Cambodia of violating a recently agreed ceasefire by flying more than two hundred and fifty unmanned aerial vehicles over Thai territory, days after the two countries pledged to halt hostilities along their contested border.
Thai Defence Ministry officials said the activity occurred late on Monday night, shortly after a truce intended to end weeks of intense fighting took effect, and represented a breach of the agreement’s terms.
Bangkok has lodged formal protests as it seeks to protect national sovereignty and ensure the ceasefire holds. Cambodia has acknowledged the shared goal of peace and engaged in discussions over the reported aerial movements, describing them as phenomena observed by both sides rather than deliberate violations.
The renewed ceasefire followed a period of the most severe clashes in years between the neighbouring Southeast Asian nations, which have been locked in a dispute over undemarcated sections of their roughly eight hundred-kilometre frontier.
The conflict reignited in early December after a previous truce brokered with international mediation broke down, leading to exchanges of artillery, airstrikes, and rocket fire that killed at least one hundred people and displaced more than half a million on both sides of the border.
Thailand and Cambodia formally signed the latest ceasefire on December twenty-seventh in a bid to stem the violence and create conditions for returning civilians and resumed diplomatic engagement.
International observers and regional partners, including representatives from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and China, have stressed the importance of consolidating the hard-won truce and building mutual trust to prevent further escalation.
In the wake of the drone allegations, high-level talks continue and both capitals face pressure to sustain the fragile peace.
Thai officials have reiterated their commitment to upholding the ceasefire’s terms while underscoring their right to guard national security, even as Cambodia calls for calm and continued dialogue.
The broader effort to achieve lasting stability hinges on both sides moving beyond recent tensions and reinforcing their ceasefire commitments.
