Thai Prime Minister Prioritizes Food Security at Regional Summits
Paetongtarn Shinawatra addresses key issues at summits in Yunnan, China
Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra of Thailand, accompanied by cabinet ministers, arrived at Kunming Changshui International Airport in Yunnan Province, China, on Wednesday to attend the eighth Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) Economic Cooperation Summit and the 10th Ayeyawady-Chao Phraya-Mekong Economic Cooperation Strategy (Acmecs) summit.
These meetings offer a platform to discuss regional concerns, particularly the promotion of exports and food security.
Prime Minister Shinawatra emphasized the importance of expanding Thailand’s export markets, focusing on the food security sector, which is increasingly significant on a global scale.
She highlighted Thailand's readiness to support these efforts through its technological and innovative capabilities.
The Thai government aims to foster deeper cooperation with regional leaders, building on discussions from the recent ASEAN summit held in Laos in October, to enhance trade and investment opportunities.
Additionally, Prime Minister Shinawatra highlighted the urgency of addressing environmental challenges such as floods, droughts, and transboundary haze pollution.
Thailand is keen on learning from neighboring countries’ experiences in disaster prevention and management.
The GMS summit, attended by the president of the Asian Development Bank and representatives of the GMS Business Council, gathers leaders from Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, and China to discuss reducing disparities in the sub-region through enhanced connectivity, competitiveness, and community.
Meanwhile, the Acmecs summit, chaired by Laos, is focused on assessing the progress of its 2019-23 master plan.
