Thailand Alleges Cambodia Breached Newly Signed Border Ceasefire Amid Tensions
Bangkok asserts that Cambodian forces violated a recently agreed ceasefire, claiming incursions via unmanned aerial vehicles and hostilities that undermine fragile peace efforts
The Thai government has formally accused Cambodia of breaching a freshly signed ceasefire agreement intended to halt weeks of violent border clashes between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.
According to a statement from the Royal Thai Army, more than two hundred and fifty unmanned aerial vehicles were observed operating across the frontier from Cambodian territory on Sunday night, actions Bangkok says contravene the terms of a truce that had taken effect earlier in the weekend.
The ceasefire, agreed by military and diplomatic officials and aimed at freezing military positions and allowing displaced civilians to begin returning home, was intended to consolidate peace following intense combat that caused significant casualties and widespread displacement.
Thailand characterised the alleged drone activity and other hostile acts as an infringement of the recently concluded accord, asserting its sovereign right to protect its territory and citizens.
The dispute centres on contested areas along the roughly eight hundred-kilometre shared border, where clashes in recent weeks have resulted in dozens of military and civilian deaths and driven hundreds of thousands from their homes.
The Thai government lodged formal protests with international witnesses to the ceasefire talks, including regional and global actors present during negotiations, underscoring its view that Cambodia’s actions demonstrate a lack of good faith and undermine efforts to stabilise the border.
Phnom Penh has acknowledged discussions about the reported incidents and agreed with Thai counterparts to investigate and address them, describing the situation as involving aerial sightings observed by both sides.
As diplomatic channels remain engaged, both capitals face mounting pressure to sustain the fragile truce and move toward longer-term peace, even as tensions persist on the ground.
