Thailand Launches Verification Process for Foreign Mobile Phone Users
Authorities to verify 700,000 foreign-registered mobile numbers to prevent technology crime and ensure secure mobile banking services
The Thai government has initiated a verification process for approximately 700,000 mobile phone numbers registered to foreigners since January 1, 2022. The move aims to ensure that the names of mobile banking service users match the names of subscribers of mobile phone numbers attached to these services, in an effort to curb technology crime.
In addition to the foreign-registered numbers, around 1.8 million unregistered mobile phone numbers will also be checked.
Banks will contact affected users for verification purposes, and those who do not receive a request from their banks can continue using mobile banking services without issue.
The measure, introduced on February 1, requires compliance by April 30, with non-compliant accounts facing termination of mobile banking services in June.
