Thailand Ramps Up Lithium Exploration Efforts to Become EV Production Hub
Thailand is advancing its lithium exploration efforts to establish itself as a leading electric vehicle (EV) production center, according to the Industry Ministry.
Minister Pimphattra Wichaikul has instructed the Department of Primary Industries and Mines (DPIM) to fast-track the search for viable lithium deposits, a critical component in manufacturing EV batteries.
In alignment with the ministry's strategy to create an inclusive EV supply chain, Pimphattra expressed the goal of reinforcing Thailand's role as a major EV manufacturing nation.
DPIM's Deputy Director-General Aditad Vasinonta identified two promising lithium sites, Reung Kiet and Bang E Tum in Phang Nga's Takua Thung district. He noted that operational approval for the Reung Kiet mine could yield enough lithium to power a million EVs.
Assurances were provided that cutting-edge exploration techniques would mitigate environmental and health impacts. The DPIM also made advancements in battery recycling technology to support a circular economy approach.
Aditad emphasized that sufficient lithium reserves would attract battery production investments and bolster confidence in Thailand's EV sector. He committed to expediting exploration and mining licences to support the industry's growth.
The government's EV 3.5 incentive program, offering subsidies and requiring carmakers to multiply their local manufacturing operations based on import numbers, has enhanced automotive manufacturers' confidence in setting up production in Thailand.
