Thailand's Hua Hin Airport Poised for International Upgrade
Transport Ministry plans to transform Hua Hin Airport into an international hub by next year, boosting tourism and economic growth.
Thailand's government has set an ambitious plan in motion to upgrade Hua Hin Airport to international status by next year.
This move was confirmed by Transport Deputy Minister Manaporn Charoensri on Saturday, marking a significant milestone for one of Thailand's key tourism locales.
The initiative will involve concerted efforts from multiple state agencies, including the Department of Airports, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand, and other relevant bodies.
The expansion is expected to meet the rising demand for both domestic and international flights, enhancing convenience for travelers and providing a substantial boost to the tourism industry.
As Minister Charoensri highlighted, these developments are designed to not only support tourism but also to invigorate the local economy.
The development blueprint for Hua Hin Airport encompasses two principal projects, as outlined by Danai Ruangsorn, Director-General of the Department of Airports (DoA).
The first involves expanding the runway to international standards, broadening it to 45 meters to accommodate larger aircraft.
This project, already completed, is currently undergoing inspection by the Civil Aviation Authority of Thailand (CAAT) to ensure it meets all necessary regulations.
The second phase focuses on expanding the existing infrastructure, including the road tunnel, runway strip, and runway-end safety areas.
This segment of the project requires an estimated investment of 300 million baht and is pending approval from the Budget Bureau.
The DoA anticipates contracting this month, with construction set to kick off in January next year and concluding by April 2026.
Presently, Hua Hin Airport supports Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 aircraft, serving up to 180 passengers.
Current facilities capably handle 300 passengers per hour, translating to approximately 860,000 passengers annually.
As further improvements unfold, the capacity is expected to significantly enhance.
Currently, Thai AirAsia operates four flights a week between Chiang Mai and Hua Hin, offering a critical domestic link for travelers.
Upgrading Hua Hin to international status heralds exciting prospects for the region's connectivity and economic dynamism.
