Thailand Secures MotoGP Hosting Rights for Five More Years to 2031
New agreement extends Thailand’s role as MotoGP venue at Buriram and advances its sport tourism and soft-power ambitions
Thailand’s Sports Authority (SAT) has confirmed that negotiations with Dorna Sports have resulted in a contract extension for the Thailand Grand Prix, ensuring the race remains at the Chang International Circuit in Buriram province for an additional five years, covering 2027 to 2031.
SAT Governor Kongsak Yodmani noted the deal includes a modest increase in licence fees while emphasising Thailand’s competitive position among MotoGP hosts.
He highlighted that the event has generated approximately HK 24 billion (US $740 million) in economic value over the past six years through tourism, investment and employment.
The official submission for the new agreement is scheduled for Cabinet approval at its meeting on 4 November 2025, after which SAT plans to deepen private-sector involvement and expand the event scale.
With Thailand having opened the MotoGP season twice consecutively, Governor Yodmani said the renewal reflects the country’s growing global brand, using MotoGP as both a sport-development and soft-power platform.
The Buriram circuit remains Thailand’s only venue meeting the certification standards of the Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM) and is expected to benefit from further upgrades to infrastructure and hospitality tied to the extension.
The proactive stance supports Thailand’s broader drive to enhance sport tourism and diversify its international event portfolio.
With this extension in place, Thailand cements its position as a premier motorsport destination in Southeast Asia and sends a signal to global motor-sport stakeholders of its long-term commitment.
The Cabinet’s imminent approval will unlock the next phase of strategy around the event’s economic and brand opportunities.
