Thailand Urges Cambodia to Refrain From Provocative Actions Amid Border Ceasefire Compliance Concerns
Bangkok calls on Phnom Penh to honour ceasefire terms and avoid statements or acts that could reignite tensions along the shared border
Thailand has formally urged Cambodia to stop engaging in actions it considers provocative and likely to undermine recent efforts to maintain peace and stability along their contested border.
Thai officials emphasised that both countries agreed in a Joint Statement to refrain from all forms of conduct that could escalate tensions, including the dissemination of inflammatory statements and unfounded accusations that could be interpreted as interference in internal affairs.
The appeals come against the backdrop of a ceasefire deal agreed in late 2025 to stem months of sporadic clashes and reduce the risk of renewed fighting amid longstanding territorial disputes.
Bangkok’s diplomatic messaging underscores its view that certain public declarations and press releases by Cambodian government figures have strained bilateral relations by implying actions by Thailand that Thai authorities regard as unfounded.
The Thai Foreign Ministry noted that the Joint Statement — which requires both sides not to undertake provocative acts — is central to sustaining a calm environment for dialogue and preventing misinterpretation of motives or actions that could derail peaceful engagement.
Despite relative calm along much of the frontier, isolated security incidents have occurred since the ceasefire, including a recent explosion that wounded a Thai soldier, prompting rapid communication between the two governments to prevent escalation.
Thailand stressed that maintaining mutual restraint, including avoiding statements that could be seen as accusatory or as interfering in each other’s domestic politics, is essential to upholding the spirit of the ceasefire and fostering conditions conducive to diplomatic negotiation.
