UNESCO has included Bangkok, Khon Kaen, and Yala in its 2024 Global Network of Learning Cities (GNLC) for championing lifelong learning, confirms Education Minister Permpoon Chidchob.
These Thai cities are recognized alongside prior members such as Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Chachoengsao, Sukhothai, Phayao, and Hat Yai.
Bangkok is praised on the GNLC website for striving to merge learning systems and aiming for a sustainable educational future. Khon Kaen is noted for its cultural learning approach to aid underprivileged communities, and Yala is commended for its commitment to innovative learning strategies tailored for local needs.
Minister Permpoon highlighted that Thailand's GNLC involvement enhances public engagement in development and facilitates hosting global academic gatherings.
UNESCO's GNLC encourages lifelong learning as part of its contribution to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Annually, cities are recognized for exceptional dedication to fostering lifelong learning among their citizens.
The GNLC currently features 64 cities from 35 nations and includes a broader network of 356 cities across 79 countries. In 2023, additional Asia Pacific cities joining the GNLC are Nanjing and Suzhou (China), Legazpi (Philippines), Busan, Seo-gu, and Hanam (South Korea), and Ho Chi Minh City and Son La (Vietnam).
