Annual Chula-Thammasat football to take place next month after four years
The anticipated Chula-Thammasat Friendly Football Match will resume next month after a four-year hiatus.
The match, which was set to mark the 75th year of the universities' rivalry in 2023, faced organizational challenges due to scheduling conflicts.
Now, students from both Chulalongkorn and Thammasat Universities are spearheading the "CU - TU Unity Football Match 2024," scheduled for March 31 at Bangkok's Supachalasai Stadium. This event aims to uphold the tradition of camaraderie and friendly competition despite not carrying the title of the 75th annual match.
The announcement comes from Chulalongkorn University's student government, which also revealed the "Chula Baka begins" sports event, set to coincide with the football match on March 31. Assistant Professor Chaiyaporn Puprasert highlighted the students' initiative in organizing the event, emphasizing the sustained spirit of collaboration between the two prestigious institutions.
Piyawit Wangchutham, a Thammasat University student, expressed his commitment to restoring this unity football match, adapting the event to modern times while maintaining its distinctive character.
The tradition of the Chula-Thammasat football matches dates back to December 4, 1934, with alternating hosting responsibilities each year. The last match held was the 74th edition on February 8, 2020. Thammasat University has a lead with 24 wins to Chulalongkorn's 18, aside from 32 draw matches.
Besides the football game, the event fosters student harmony through parades, cheerleading, satirical performances, and charity work. While the unity match is student-driven, the traditional "Chulalongkorn-Thammasat" match is organized by the universities themselves.
