Authorities Dismantle Human Trafficking Network Exploiting Social Media
Trafficking Ring Used Facebook and TikTok to Lure Girls into Forced Marriages in China
On October 24, authorities at Mandalay International Airport thwarted a human trafficking operation during a joint inspection led by the 11th Anti-Trafficking Police Force.
Chinese national Gao Fengying, along with three young women, was intercepted while attempting to board a flight to Thailand’s Suvarnabhumi Airport.
Further interrogations revealed a larger scheme orchestrated by Daw Nan Sai Kham, also known as Mar Mar, to traffic women for forced marriages in China.
The investigation led to the discovery of 11 additional women detained on 64 (D) Street, Pyigyitakun Township, Mandalay.
Using social media platforms Facebook and TikTok to lure victims with promises of employment, the network included traffickers Ma May Htet Naing Oo (Ma Htet), Chit Htoo, and Ma Phyo Phyo Wai, who managed recruitment and logistics in Myanmar.
They established operations in rented buildings in Mandalay, coordinating with Chinese contacts Lin Jian and his mother Li Manfen, who traveled to Myanmar for this purpose.
The traffickers arranged documentation under Mar Mar's direction.
The victims were initially meant to be transported through border areas, then rerouted through Thailand.
Charges have been filed against several suspects, including Daw Nan Sai Kham, Ma May Htet Naing Oo, Ma Zin Thu Khaing, Chit Htoo, Ma Phyo Phyo Wai, Gao Fengying, Lin Jian, and Li Manfen across various police stations in Mandalay.
