Motorists in Bangkok can now personalise their license plates with 70 new Thai words, as announced by the Royal Gazette on Friday.
The new additions range from auspicious words such as แก้วมณี (precious stones), รวยสุข (rich in happiness), ราบรื่น (smoothness), ยศดี (nobility), มีทรัพย์ (wealthy) to everyday terms like ไข่เจียว (omelette), ชัดเจน (clear), สุดหล่อ (handsome), along with common Thai nicknames like ต้น (Ton), เต้ย (Toey), and นิด (Nid).
These additions apply to passenger vehicles with up to seven seats.
Previously, Thai licence plates contained two Thai letters followed by a four-digit number; however, due to rising vehicle registrations, a number was added in front of the letters by the Department of Land Transport (DLT).
In 2022, personalised licence plates were introduced via auctions that start at one million baht, subsequently held regularly at DLT offices, with proceeds supporting road safety initiatives.
The country's most expensive plate “9กก 9999” was sold for 45.09 million baht in December 2022.
