Survivors Detail Abuse in Myanmar Scam Centers Amid Ongoing Crackdown

Rescued individuals recount experiences of torture and coercion as multinational efforts intensify to dismantle scam operations along the Thai-Myanmar border.
In a Thai military camp, four Ethiopian men recently displayed bruises and scars they attribute to their time in one of Myanmar's notorious scam compounds.

Nineteen-year-old Yotor, who provided only his first name, revealed cuts along his leg, stating, "I received electric shocks every day." These individuals are among approximately 260 people, primarily human trafficking victims, transferred from Myanmar to Thailand last week as part of a multinational crackdown on scam centers operating along the border between the two countries.

For years, criminal organizations have trafficked hundreds of thousands of individuals into scam compounds across Southeast Asia, including areas along the Thai-Myanmar frontier.

Victims have been coerced into participating in illegal online operations.

Thai authorities intensified their crackdown following the abduction of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who was lured to Thailand with the promise of a lucrative acting job.

He was later found near the Myanmar town of Myawaddy and has since returned home.

In response, Thailand has cut electricity, fuel, and internet supplies to certain border areas, a measure that China has requested to continue.

Yotor recounted being enticed to Thailand for a job in Bangkok but was instead taken to Myanmar.

"They lied," he said.

Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra announced that approximately 7,000 individuals rescued from scam compounds in Myanmar are awaiting transfer to Thailand.

Defense Minister Phumtham Wechayachai specified that around 600 Chinese nationals will be repatriated on three flights starting Thursday from Mae Sot, Thailand, after crossing the border.

Some survivors reported being forced to work nearly 20 hours daily, defrauding individuals through instant messaging applications like WhatsApp.

Faysal, a 21-year-old from Bangladesh, explained, "When a client says 'I love ...

,' then we start washing his brain ...

." Failure to meet targets resulted in beatings.

"We are not scammers," Faysal emphasized.

"We are victims." The Democratic Karen Buddhist Army, a Myanmar rebel group, has been instrumental in rescuing victims and transferring them to Thai authorities.

The United Nations estimates that criminal gangs have trafficked hundreds ...

into scam compounds across Southeast Asia, forcing them to participate in illegal online operations.

Efforts to combat these operations have included cutting utilities to affected areas and coordinating with international partners to repatriate victims.

The crackdown has intensified following high-profile incidents, such as the abduction of Chinese actor ...

leading to increased international cooperation to dismantle these fraudulent networks.

The repatriation process is ongoing, with various embassies coordinating to return their citizens to their respective countries.

To date, 25 individuals have been repatriated, with more expected as authorities continue to address the human trafficking associated with these operations.
