Thai Ranger Injured in Landmine Explosion Near Cambodian Border
Blast near ancient temple in Surin province severs soldier’s leg amid recent spate of border landmine incidents
A paramilitary ranger from the 2610 Paramilitary Ranger Company lost a leg after triggering a landmine during a patrol near the Ta Muen Thom temple ruins in Phanom Dong Rak district, Surin province, on Tuesday morning.
The Royal Thai Army reported the explosion occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m. as the unit was operating in the border area with Cambodia.
The injured soldier was transported to hospital for treatment.
Military officials state that the incident is the latest in a series of landmine explosions along the Thai-Cambodian border, where recently laid devices have been reported.
In the past weeks, twelve Thai soldiers have been injured by landmines on Thai territory in the lower northeastern provinces, with four losing their legs before this latest case.
The area around the Ta Muen Thom temple has been a focal point of security patrols and clearance operations.
Thai military engineers have been conducting mine removal efforts in several provinces adjacent to Cambodia, aiming to locate and safely dispose of anti-personnel devices found near civilian zones and historic sites.
