Thai Travelers Shift Toward Short-Haul Asia Trips as Vietnam and Rayong Surge in Popularity

Thai Travelers Shift Toward Short-Haul Asia Trips as Vietnam and Rayong Surge in Popularity

New travel data shows Ho Chi Minh City and Thailand’s Rayong province leading a regional pivot toward short, budget-friendly getaways driven by cost pressure and convenience
A structural shift in regional travel demand is reshaping how Thai tourists choose destinations, with short-haul Asian cities and nearby coastal provinces increasingly dominating outbound and domestic travel patterns.

The trend is defined by a move away from long-haul or complex itineraries toward faster, cheaper, and easier trips that can be organized around long weekends and tight budgets.

What is confirmed is that recent search and booking data from major online travel platforms shows Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam and Rayong in Thailand among the fastest-growing destinations for Thai travelers.

Ho Chi Minh City recorded the strongest growth in international search interest, rising sharply compared with other regional cities, while Rayong led domestic growth among Thai beach destinations within driving distance of Bangkok.

The underlying mechanism is straightforward.

Rising living costs, higher transport expenses, and limited discretionary income are pushing travelers to prioritize value and convenience.

Short-haul destinations reduce airfare costs, shorten travel time, and allow flexible last-minute planning.

This is especially visible during peak long-weekend periods when millions of Thai residents take brief holidays rather than extended vacations.

Rayong’s rise reflects the strength of Thailand’s domestic coastal corridor southeast of Bangkok, which includes beach towns and island gateways that can be reached within a few hours by road.

The province benefits from its proximity, relatively low travel friction, and a mix of quiet beaches, seafood markets, and secondary island access points that appeal to short-stay travelers.

Ho Chi Minh City’s growth reflects broader regional dynamics in Southeast Asia, where Vietnam has become a leading competitor for short-haul tourism demand.

The city offers dense urban tourism, food culture, and nightlife at relatively low cost, making it attractive for three-to-four-day trips.

Other Vietnamese destinations such as Da Nang also show similar upward trends in Thai search behavior.

The shift is not limited to leisure preferences but is also tied to economic behavior.

Travel analysts have linked the pattern to post-festival spending caution and broader household budget tightening, which encourages shorter trips and lower-cost accommodation choices.

At the same time, airlines and booking platforms report sustained demand for regional flights even as long-haul travel grows more selective.

The implications extend beyond tourism statistics.

For Thailand, the trend reinforces the importance of maintaining competitiveness in nearby destinations as Vietnamese cities gain share in regional travel demand.

For Vietnam, increasing Thai interest signals strengthening cross-border tourism integration within mainland Southeast Asia’s short-haul travel economy.

The result is a regional travel map increasingly defined by proximity rather than distance, where weekend-friendly destinations such as Rayong and Ho Chi Minh City function as interchangeable options in a shared short-haul market shaped by price sensitivity and time constraints.
