Thailand and Cambodia Agree to Consolidate Ceasefire in Yunnan Talks as China Steps Up Mediation
After weeks of deadly border clashes, the two neighbours pledge to rebuild trust and maintain peace following trilateral diplomatic discussions in China’s Yunnan province
Thailand and Cambodia have agreed to work on consolidating a ceasefire and rebuilding mutual trust after weeks of fierce border fighting, as part of trilateral talks held in Yunnan province with Chinese mediation.
The commitment came after both countries signed a fresh ceasefire agreement late in December that halted hostilities that had killed at least one hundred and displaced hundreds of thousands along their shared frontier.
The discussions in southwestern China involved the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia alongside Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who emphasised the importance of sustaining the hard-won ceasefire and avoiding a return to violence.
Participants agreed to expand communication channels and strengthen political trust between the two capitals while exploring avenues for restoring normal bilateral relations and cooperation.
Chinese officials positioned Beijing as a constructive facilitator, offering to continue hosting talks and creating conditions for comprehensive dialogue, including involvement by military representatives and other authorities.
The ceasefire follows earlier accords, including one brokered in Kuala Lumpur under the auspices of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations and supported by external partners, as well as a more recent truce signed at a border checkpoint after weeks of renewed clashes.
Both Thailand and Cambodia have reiterated their commitment to implementing the cessation of hostilities, which includes maintaining current troop positions and refraining from further offensive operations, while working toward confidence-building measures.
The follow-up discussions in Yunnan are seen as part of broader regional efforts to ensure long-term peace and stability, with China underscoring its role in supporting peaceful resolution and ongoing dialogue between the two Southeast Asian neighbours.
