Thailand and Cambodia Sign Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord Under Trump’s Mediation

Landmark deal brokered at ASEAN summit commits both sides to end border hostilities, withdraw heavy weapons, and begin mine clearance under regional supervision
Thailand and Cambodia formally signed the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord on October 26, 2025, ending months of border violence and paving the way for a comprehensive peace framework under the watch of U.S. President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The agreement, reached during the ASEAN summit in Kuala Lumpur, commits both nations to an immediate halt to hostilities and establishes a robust mechanism for de-escalation and reconciliation.

Under the terms of the accord, both countries pledged to withdraw heavy weapons from contested border zones, return troops to their bases, and permit an ASEAN Observer Team to monitor compliance.

The deal also mandates coordinated de-mining operations along affected regions and the reopening of key border crossings to restore civilian movement and trade.

A joint Thai–Cambodian committee will oversee implementation, supported by ASEAN and U.S. technical advisors.

President Trump hailed the accord as “a triumph of diplomacy and courage,” emphasizing that America’s leadership in Southeast Asia was grounded in peace and prosperity.

He noted that the agreement would save countless lives and strengthen regional stability.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar described the deal as a reflection of ASEAN’s unity, while both Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet praised Trump’s personal involvement in brokering the final text.

The peace declaration follows months of deadly border clashes that erupted in July over disputed temple sites, killing dozens and displacing more than 300,000 civilians.

The Kuala Lumpur Accord expands on the earlier ceasefire reached in July, introducing a binding verification system and commitments to curb inflammatory propaganda that had previously fueled tensions.

Analysts describe the accord as the most detailed and enforceable agreement between the two nations in decades.

However, its success hinges on mutual trust and the depoliticization of border issues at home.

For now, the ceasefire appears to be holding, and the accord has been widely praised as one of the Trump administration’s most significant foreign policy achievements in Asia.
