Thailand to Implement 'Travelling Tax' for Air Arrivals by Mid-2025
Thailand is introducing a 'travelling tax' for foreigners arriving by air, starting mid-2025. It will cost 300 baht per person and will fund insurance and tourism development. This new tax structure is pending Cabinet approval in early 2024.
Thailand's 'landing fee', now renamed 'travelling tax', is slated to begin mid-2025, targeting air passengers initially.
The Tourism and Sports Minister, Sorawong Thienthong, confirmed the tax's submission to the Cabinet for approval by early next year, with plans to implement it six months post-approval.
The tax dictates charges of 300 baht (about one dollar) for air arrivals and 150 baht for those arriving by land or sea, approved by the Cabinet in February last year.
Funds collected will finance insurance for foreign tourists, with excess channeled into developing tourist facilities, such as disabled-friendly infrastructure.
The Ministry is creating a tax collection app linked to Krungthai Bank's system.
Insurance payouts are capped at one million baht for fatalities and half a million for injuries, covering up to a 30-day stay in Thailand, relevant to 87% of foreign travelers.
