MG Aims to Export 'Made in Thailand' EVs to Europe
SAIC Motor, the Thai manufacturer behind the MG brand electric vehicles, is setting a precedent as Thailand's first domestic EV producer to target the European market.
Facing steep EU tariffs on Chinese imports, which can reach up to 38%, Chinese automakers are increasingly turning to Thailand as a strategic manufacturing hub.
This move leverages Thailand's potential to bypass these tariffs by ensuring that EVs contain over 40% locally sourced parts, qualifying them as Thai-originated.
Suroj Sangsit, the executive vice president of SAIC Motor-CP, sees this as a significant opportunity for Thailand to support Chinese EVs entering Europe and stimulate local technological advancements in EV components.
