Ayutthaya High-Speed Rail Project Adjustments to Preserve Heritage Site
State Railway of Thailand to modify Ayutthaya station design after World Heritage Committee's recommendations.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) has agreed to modify the design of the Ayutthaya High-Speed Rail Station to preserve the integrity of the original Ayutthaya Railway Station, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Following a visit from experts including representatives from the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS), the World Heritage Committee's advisory body recommended reducing the height of the station’s roof to avoid overshadowing the historic station.
The SRT has acknowledged the recommendation and will prepare a heritage impact assessment (HIA) report for submission to the World Heritage Centre.
The Ayutthaya section of the Sino-Thai high-speed rail, spanning 13.3 kilometres with a budget of over ten billion baht, is currently on hold pending the HIA.
Proposed adjustments include lowering the station’s height from 37.45 metres to 35.45 metres and reducing the track elevation from 19 metres to 17 metres to minimize the impact on the surrounding cultural landscape.
