Bangkok Plans to Plant Over One Million Trees in Eastern Districts by 2026
Tree-planting campaign targets nine districts to expand green space and enhance urban environment
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) has announced a large-scale urban forestry initiative aimed at planting approximately 1.06 million trees across nine eastern districts of the capital by 2026. The campaign was discussed during the second BMA executive meeting of 2025, chaired by Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt. The tree-planting initiative will be implemented in Nong Chok, Khlong Sam Wa, Lat Krabang, Khan Na Yao, Bang Kapi, Bueng Kum, Prawet, Min Buri, and Saphan Sung.
Nong Chok is set to plant 400,000 trees, while Khlong Sam Wa and Lat Krabang are expected to plant 300,000 trees each.
The remaining six districts will plant 10,000 trees each.According to the BMA’s timeline, most district offices are expected to complete their respective planting projects by the end of 2025. Exceptions include Khlong Sam Wa and Nong Chok, where planting efforts will extend into March and April 2026, respectively.Governor Chadchart emphasized that trees should be planted in accessible locations to facilitate care and maintenance, such as along public spaces, canals, and roadsides where water trucks can reach.
District offices are also coordinating with private entities to encourage tree planting on privately owned land. The BMA’s Environment Department has been assigned to select appropriate tree species based on factors including local landscape suitability and potential to serve as tourist attractions.
Authorities have also been directed to avoid planting certain fruit trees that may require complex maintenance or pose safety concerns along public roads. The campaign aligns with broader environmental goals, including air quality improvement.
Relevant agencies have been tasked with studying tree species that can effectively filter dust particles.
The initiative is being promoted as a model for other Bangkok districts to follow.
