Bangkok Ranks as Third Most Expensive City in Southeast Asia

Bangkok is ranked as the third most expensive city in Southeast Asia for international workers, according to Mercer's survey of 226 cities. This ranking considers multiple cost factors like housing, transportation, and food. Singapore is the costliest in the region, followed by Phnom Penh and Bangkok.
Bangkok has been ranked third amongst the costliest cities in Southeast Asia for international workers by business adviser Mercer.

The 2023 ranking assessed the cost of living in 226 cities worldwide, evaluating over 200 items in each location, including housing, transportation, food, clothing, household goods, and entertainment.

Singapore topped the list in Southeast Asia, followed by Phnom Penh and Bangkok.

On the global scale, Bangkok placed 129th, dropping by 24 positions from the previous year.

The world's top three costliest cities for international workers remained unchanged: Hong Kong, Singapore, and Zurich.

Other expensive Asian cities include Shanghai, Beijing, and Seoul.

Mercer highlighted the influence of economic factors such as inflation and exchange-rate fluctuations on living costs.

The company also pointed out that economic and geopolitical volatility, coupled with local conflicts and emergencies, have elevated expenses in housing, utilities, taxes, and education.

This cost-of-living crisis has affected the ability of multinational organizations to attract and retain top talent, raising compensation costs and limiting talent mobility.

Mercer advised organizations to stay informed about cost-of-living trends and develop tailored solutions to ensure employee well-being and satisfaction.
