Bangkok to Beijing Train Journey Nears with Trial Run
Travel between Bangkok and Beijing via train is nearing reality as Thailand plans a trial service between Bangkok and Vientiane from July 13 to 14, 2024. The link will connect Bangkok to Beijing, with stops in Vientiane and Kunming, covering approximately 2,000 miles in almost a day. The project aims to boost economic and tourism ties between Thailand and China, with future high-speed rail plans expected by 2028.
Thailand is moving closer to launching a rail link between Bangkok and Beijing.
The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) will conduct a trial service between Bangkok and Vientiane, Laos, from July 13 to 14, 2024.
Once operational, this new rail connection will facilitate travel from Bangkok to Beijing, with stops in Vientiane and Kunming, China.
The journey will span approximately 2,000 miles and take nearly a full day to complete.
This compares to just under five hours for a direct flight.
The Bangkok to Kunming rail link will also streamline the transport of Thai goods to China, reducing delivery times significantly.
Thailand is enhancing its connectivity with China to stimulate its economy, particularly in trade and tourism sectors.
In 2023, Thailand's exports and imports with China totaled nearly 32 billion and 65.3 billion U.S. dollars respectively, with key export products being fruit and rubber.
China is Thailand's top trading partner, and both nations are also strengthening tourism ties.
Chinese visitors can stay in Thailand for up to 60 days, while Thai tourists are allowed a 30-day stay in China.
Additionally, a future high-speed rail project linking Thailand to China through Laos is anticipated by 2028.
