Calls for Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen's Degrees to be Revoked by Thai Universities
Pressure is mounting on two Thai universities to revoke honorary degrees awarded to Hun Sen following his involvement in recent border clashes with Thailand.
A growing number of individuals are urging two Thai universities to revoke honorary degrees awarded to Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen, after a similar action was taken by Ramkhamhaeng University.
The calls come in response to Hun Sen’s involvement in recent border clashes with Thailand, which resulted in violent actions that led to the revocation of his Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy in Political Science by Ramkhamhaeng University.
Asst Prof Rathapong Boonyanuwat, former dean of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at Suan Sunandha Rajabhat University, has praised Ramkhamhaeng University's decision, highlighting Hun Sen's other honorary degrees awarded by two additional Thai institutions.
These include a PhD in Education for Local Development from Bansomdejchaopraya Rajabhat University in 2006 and a PhD in Political Communication from Krirk University in 2019.
Rathapong has called for the revocation of these degrees to preserve the pride and reputation of the institutions involved and to safeguard national sovereignty.
He emphasized that Hun Sen's actions have posed a threat to Thailand's sovereignty and that the two universities should follow Ramkhamhaeng University’s lead.
