China Seeks Thai Support in Combating Myawaddy Scam Gangs
A Chinese delegation urges Thailand to take action against Chinese-operated call-center gangs in Myanmar, which are scamming victims worldwide.
A Chinese delegation, led by Liu Zhongyi, assistant minister of public security, visited Thailand's Cyber Crime Investigation Bureau (CCIB) in Nonthaburi on Monday to seek support in cracking down on call-center scam gangs based in Myanmar’s Myawaddy city.
According to Chinese officials, 36 major gangs, employing over 100,000 individuals, have been defrauding victims through fake calls.
The delegation highlighted the exploitation of Chinese citizens, with reports of assaults and even fatalities among those lured into these gangs.
Notably, Chinese actor Wang Xing was rescued earlier this month after being deceived into traveling to Myanmar under the guise of a casting audition.
The case has contributed to heightened concerns about safety, affecting travel to Thailand. The delegation urged Thai authorities to arrest the leaders of these gangs and block their operational channels.
They also asked for swift action in extraditing about 20 suspects tied to the Wang Xing case, and the identification and release of Chinese victims still held in Myanmar.
Additionally, the delegation proposed the establishment of a Thai-Chinese coordination center to better address the issue. In response, CCIB Chief Pol Lt-General Trairong Phiwpan suggested increased cooperation between China and Thailand, particularly in information sharing on human trafficking and money laundering linked to these scams.
He also recommended a regional meeting involving Myanmar, Laos, and Cambodia to foster a collaborative, sustainable approach.
Trairong affirmed that Thailand was ready to collaborate with relevant agencies to disrupt the operations of these gangs.
