GWM Begins Thai Production of Ora 5 as China’s EV Expansion Deepens in Southeast Asia

Great Wall Motor launches local assembly of its Ora 5 electric SUV in Thailand, strengthening the country’s role as a regional EV manufacturing hub and accelerating deliveries across Southeast Asia
Great Wall Motor’s decision to begin local production of the Ora 5 in Thailand reflects a broader shift in global electric vehicle manufacturing, where Chinese automakers are increasingly building regional supply chains outside China to secure export capacity and reduce logistical friction.

The Ora 5 is a compact crossover SUV produced under GWM’s Ora sub-brand, designed to be offered in multiple powertrain configurations, including fully electric, hybrid, and combustion variants.

What is confirmed is that production of the Ora 5 has started at GWM’s Smart Factory in Rayong, Thailand, marking the model’s first major manufacturing base outside China.

The Thai plant is being positioned as both a domestic assembly site and a regional export hub, with reported annual capacity of up to tens of thousands of vehicles and a high proportion of locally sourced components.

The rollout includes initial customer deliveries beginning shortly after production commencement, signaling that the line is not purely experimental but intended for immediate market supply.

The Ora 5 itself is built on GWM’s modular ONE platform, which allows the company to produce multiple drivetrain types on a single production architecture.

This approach reduces manufacturing complexity and enables rapid adaptation to different regional demand profiles.

In Thailand, where hybrid vehicles remain particularly popular alongside growing demand for battery electric vehicles, the flexibility of the platform is central to GWM’s strategy.

The model is effectively replacing earlier Ora lineups in the Thai market while expanding into a more SUV-oriented segment.

The Thai production launch is also part of a wider industrial realignment in Southeast Asia, where Thailand has become a key beneficiary of foreign EV investment due to supportive industrial policy, established automotive infrastructure, and export-oriented logistics.

Chinese manufacturers, including GWM, BYD, and others, are increasingly using Thailand as a base for right-hand-drive production targeting ASEAN markets, Australia, and parts of Europe.

The Ora 5 itself has been positioned as a competitive entry in the compact electric SUV category, competing with models from both Chinese rivals and established global automakers.

Its specifications, based on earlier market disclosures, include battery options in the mid-range segment and a design focused on urban usability rather than long-range premium positioning.

The vehicle’s launch in Thailand follows earlier rollout plans in China and reflects GWM’s broader strategy of synchronizing global model introductions across multiple regions.

The key implication of the Thai production start is not just increased availability of a single model, but the acceleration of China’s overseas EV industrial footprint.

By manufacturing locally, GWM reduces tariffs, shortens delivery timelines, and embeds itself more deeply in regional supply chains.

At the same time, it increases competitive pressure on both Japanese and Western automakers that have historically dominated Southeast Asian markets.

For Thailand, the expansion reinforces its role as one of the most important automotive production centers outside China, particularly as the country transitions from internal combustion engine exports toward electrified vehicle output.

The Ora 5 line is part of a broader wave of investment that is reshaping the country’s automotive sector toward electric and hybrid production capacity.
