MEA Resumes Major Cable Removal Drive Along Ngamwongwan Road and Beyond
Plan covers forty‑seven routes over more than one hundred seventy‑one kilometres to replace overhead cables with underground infrastructure
The Metropolitan Electricity Authority (MEA) has resumed its overhead cable removal project, beginning with a cleanup along Ngamwongwan Road from Khae Rai Junction to Vibhavadi Rangsit Road.
The initiative forms part of a broader 2025 programme targeting forty‑seven major routes, covering over one hundred seventy‑one point two four kilometres, with coordinated support from the Nonthaburi Provincial Office, national anti‑corruption agencies, telecom regulators, security forces and telecom providers .
MEA Assistant Governor Rachain Unwet highlighted the importance of clearing cables in the heavily trafficked corridor, with a four‑point‑five kilometre overhead removal section set for completion by end of August 2024, followed by an additional four kilometres of underground cable work .
Under the 2025 master plan, industrial partners aim to transition overhead lines underground across forty‑seven designated roads including Rama IV, Witthayu, Sutthisan Winitchai, Lat Phrao (Phase 1), Charan Sanitwong (Phase 2) and Ratchadaphisek roads.
Beyond this phase, longer‑term goals include removing cables from nearly six hundred ninety‑seven routes covering around one thousand five hundred sixty‑three kilometres, and installing fire‑retardant communication lines on purpose‑built brackets to replace obsolete wiring .
MEA is also implementing a Smart Communication Cable Management (Smart CCM) platform, enabling online permit applications for cable installation, maintaining owner records, and mapping routes via GIS technology to ensure transparency and efficiency .
Alongside the cable removal efforts, MEA’s underground power cable programme continues: the goal is to bury approximately three hundred thirteen point five kilometres of power lines by two thousand twenty‑nine.
The plan includes concurrent underground installation of communication and power cables to reduce disruption in urban areas .
MEA serves electricity distribution across Bangkok, Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan, coordinating efforts according to national strategic energy infrastructure plans and Ministry of Interior directives.
Safety protocols are in place to protect workers during cable removal and installation operations .
