National Telecom Unveils Ambitious 5-Billion-Baht Expansion Strategy
National Telecom (NT) is planning to invest 5 billion baht in business growth, particularly in artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers, to enhance its position in the telecom industry.
Colonel Sanphachai Huvanandana, the managing director, stated that approval is being sought from the State Enterprise Policy Committee (SEPC) for the company's seven strategic initiatives, which were submitted on December 16.
These initiatives include property development, leveraging AI and Big Data, providing digital services to government offices, forming joint ventures, expanding mobile services for government, developing fibre cable leasing for broadband providers, and seeking partners for broadband competition, particularly in Bangkok.
The SEPC has highlighted NT’s plan for new data centers at the Klong Toei and Ngamwongwan offices to support cloud services alongside international partners, noting that four or five foreign companies are interested in collaboration.
Sanphachai also mentioned that NT's current data centers in Bang Rak and Nonthaburi will reach capacity in two years, leading to a swift decision on building the new centers.
Expecting a cloud services demand increase by up to 20%, NT is appealing to the Digital Economy and Society Ministry for investment privileges to attract foreign investors for partnerships or client services.
NT plans to roll out 700MHz frequency services for machine-to-machine communication and introduce a shared infrastructure for broadband operators to reduce clutter and costs.
Despite facing a 2.5 billion baht loss in broadband due to private competition and legal expenses tallying 100 million baht, NT is aiming to establish new partnerships in the sector. This financial setback has led to a smaller staff pay raise of 5% compared to the initially projected 6.5%.
