Proposal for buffer zone at Malaysia-Thai border presented to Home Ministry
A proposal for creating a buffer zone along the 99km Malaysia-Thailand border has been submitted to the Home Ministry to tackle smuggling, according to Kelantan Police Chief Comm Muhamad Zaki Harun.
The initiative is under review by the ministry. Comm Muhamad Zaki, who spoke after opening a local police-sponsored bird and chicken contest, emphasized the necessity of the buffer zone to aid law enforcement in combating smuggling.
He expressed confidence that the buffer zone could significantly reduce smuggling if established near the state. With regards to unused illegal jetties on the border, the police, in collaboration with local authorities, are seeking solutions to prevent them from facilitating smuggling.
These jetties, built on private land, pose particular challenges, but Comm Muhamad Zaki expects heightened community awareness to deter the construction of new jetties for illicit activities.
