Thai Airways to Invest in THB 10 Billion MRO Project at U-Tapao Airport
Thai Airways moves forward with an aircraft maintenance center project following a shift in its state enterprise status.
Thai Airways International Plc (THAI) is advancing its plans to invest in a substantial 10-billion-baht aircraft maintenance, repair, and overhaul (MRO) center at U-Tapao Airport.
This decision comes after the Thai Cabinet recently annulled an earlier resolution that had granted THAI exclusive development rights while it was classified as a state enterprise.
As THAI is no longer recognized as a state-owned entity, the Eastern Economic Corridor Office (EECO) has announced a shift to a private-sector lease model for the project, which will enable a wider range of investment opportunities.
Chula Sukmanop, the Secretary-General of EECO, has confirmed that the land designated for the project will soon be available for bidding, prioritizing Thai investors in the initial phases.
Additionally, both Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways (BA) have indicated their willingness to co-invest, having previously allocated capital and completed feasibility studies pertinent to the venture.
EECO anticipates construction of the MRO hub will commence later this year, aligning with the ongoing development efforts at U-Tapao Airport and the overarching Eastern Aviation City initiative.
This project aims to bolster Thailand's aviation infrastructure and foster economic growth in the region.
