Thai Government to Accelerate Aid for Civilians Affected by Border Clashes
Government preparing measures to boost rehabilitation funds and deliver housing support for residents impacted by Thai–Cambodian conflict
The Thai government is preparing to expedite financial assistance for civilians affected by recent clashes along the Thai–Cambodian border, with a proposal to be discussed at the upcoming cabinet meeting next week, according to Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat.
He stated that sufficient funds are available, removing the need to divert resources from the economic stimulus budget.
Mr Julapun confirmed that discussions are underway to increase rehabilitation funding, following instructions from acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai to ensure a comprehensive process.
This includes identifying funding sources prior to cabinet submission.
He noted that while the pace of proceedings may not satisfy all parties, the plan is expected to be finalised next week.
Any increase in rehabilitation funds will follow established procedures, with proposals submitted by relevant agencies and reviewed accordingly.
Disbursements to date have been made without delays.
Mr Julapun said the Comptroller General's Department may consider waiving certain regulations to accelerate assistance for those whose homes and livelihoods were affected.
On proposed allowances for village defence volunteers in affected areas, he said the decision would rest with the Interior Ministry.
He declined to address speculation about expanding such payments nationally.
Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra has donated 2.6 million baht to the government's prefabricated housing project for residents whose homes were damaged during the conflict.
In the first phase of recovery efforts, the government has constructed 11 prefabricated homes in Ubon Ratchathani province’s Nam Yuen district, with four already handed over.
Each unit can house between two and five people.
A preliminary survey recorded damage to more than 80 houses in the district.
To support rebuilding, well-behaved inmates from Ubon Ratchathani Central Prison have been enlisted to assist with repairs and demolition of damaged homes.
