Thai House Approves Weekly Retirement Lottery Bill
Legislation allows citizens aged 15 and over to participate in a lottery aimed at fostering savings for retirement
On July 23, 2025, the House of Representatives in Thailand passed an amendment bill to the National Savings Fund Act, establishing a weekly retirement lottery open to individuals aged 15 and older.
The legislation garnered significant support, with 427 votes in favor, against one vote opposed, three abstentions, and four members choosing not to vote.
Under the new law, lottery tickets will be made available for purchase at 50 baht each, with weekly draws scheduled for Fridays at 5 PM.
The lottery will feature five first prizes of one million baht each and ten thousand second prizes of 1,000 baht each.
Any winnings will be directly credited to the winners' PromptPay accounts.
Funds spent on lottery tickets by participants who do not win will not be lost; instead, they will be automatically deposited into a savings account aimed at retirement within the National Savings Fund framework.
At the age of 60, participants will receive their total expenditures back along with accrued returns from the Fund.
Individuals aged over 60 will also be permitted to purchase lottery tickets and are entitled to receive their investment back, plus returns, within five years.
In the event of a participant's death, beneficiaries will inherit the funds.
Deputy Finance Minister Paopoom Rojanasakul, speaking before the vote, highlighted that the bill aims to encourage savings among Thais who have a penchant for lottery participation.
He emphasized the intended economic benefits of the retirement lottery, noting a purchase cap of 3,000 baht per month per individual to maintain equitable access across socioeconomic classes.
The government has indicated plans to officially implement the retirement lottery in the fourth quarter of 2025.
Following approval from the House, the bill will now be sent to the Senate for further deliberation.
