Thailand Gears Up for Surge in Chinese New Year Tourism
Airports Prepare for a 22% Increase in Arrivals Amidst Reassurances of Safety and Efficiency
As the Chinese New Year approaches, Thailand is preparing for an influx of tourists, particularly from China, expected to significantly boost its tourism sector.
The country's Transport Minister, Suriya Jungrungreangkit, has instructed Airports of Thailand (AoT) to gear up for this surge, with foreign arrivals projected to reach approximately 4 million over the 10-day holiday period from January 24 to February 2. This figure includes an anticipated 770,000 visitors from China, marking a 22.6% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.
The Chinese New Year, which will be celebrated on January 29, is a critical period for the Thai tourism industry, as it tests the country's ability to assure visitors of their safety.
This comes after recent concerns over security following an incident involving the abduction of a Chinese actor in Thailand by a Myanmar-based scam gang, which had been widely publicized in China.
Transport Minister Suriya emphasized the importance of facilitating travel in all aspects, particularly focusing on safety and the provision of timely services using modern technology.
The AoT has been tasked with coordinating with various agencies to enhance manpower to effectively manage both inbound and outbound passenger services.
AoT President Kirati Kijmanawat has indicated the company's readiness to accommodate the increase in flights and passenger numbers at its six international airports, which include Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Chiang Mai, Mae Fah Luang Chiang Rai, Phuket, and Hat Yai airports.
The holiday period is expected to see 24,599 flights, averaging about 2,460 daily at these airports.
Bangkok remains the top destination for tourists during the Chinese New Year, reflecting the capital's popularity among both Thai and international travelers.
Accommodation search data from digital travel platform Agoda corroborates this trend, with significant increases in searches for destinations like Pattaya and Chiang Mai as well.
In an effort to reassure visitors and ensure a smooth travel experience, Mr. Suriya has instructed AoT to prioritize passenger safety and convenience, enhancing security checks and improving the efficiency of baggage claim and airline check-in processes.
Additionally, multi-language assistance will be available to aid international visitors, further enhancing their travel experience.
Overall, Thailand is positioning itself to not only manage the anticipated influx of tourists efficiently but also to restore confidence among international visitors by ensuring safety and delivering exceptional service.
This strategic preparation underscores the country's commitment to supporting its vital tourism industry as it continues to recover and grow in the post-pandemic era.
