Thailand is world’s 3rd-largest chicken exporter, generates THB100 bn revenue
Thailand ranks as the world's third-largest chicken exporter, earning over 100 billion baht in revenue.
The nation exported more than 100,000 tonnes of chicken last year, trailing only Brazil and the United States. According to Chaweewan Kampa, president of the Poultry Promotion Association of Thailand, the country climbed from fourth to third place in 2023.
She commended government efforts that facilitated exports and managed costs, like extending a World Trade Organisation agreement allowing cheaper soybean meal imports for animal feed.
This WTO agreement reduces the soybean meal import tariff to 2% instead of 119% and lowers corn tariffs for animal feed from 70% to 20% for up to 54,700 tonnes.
Despite these measures, Chaweewan highlighted Thailand's high production costs compared to Brazil and the US, major producers of soybean and corn feed inputs, and suggested extending WTO agreement terms.
Echoing the need for cost control, Sitthiphan Thanakiatpinyo, president of the Swine Raisers Association of Thailand, emphasized that animal feed is the biggest expense for farmers.
He called for further tax reductions on animal feed imports, such as soybean meal, DDGS, and fishmeal, and relaxed wheat import restrictions.
