Thailand, Laos, and China Collaborate on Cross-Border Rail Network
The partnership aims to enhance regional trade through an integrated rail freight system connecting the three countries.
Thailand, Laos, and China are embarking on a collaborative effort to establish a comprehensive and efficient rail freight network designed to facilitate regional trade and economic integration.
A focal point of this initiative is the Bangkok-Nong Khai high-speed railway project, which will serve as a critical link connecting Thailand to Laos and eventually to China’s expansive rail infrastructure.
The project is structured in two phases:
Phase 1 involves the construction of a 253-kilometre segment from Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima.
This section is currently under development with an allocated budget of 179.4 billion baht.
Its expected operational date is set for 2027.
Phase 2 consists of a 357-kilometre extension connecting Nakhon Ratchasima to Nong Khai.
This extension received formal approval from the Thai Cabinet in February and carries an investment estimate of approximately 340 billion baht.
It is projected to become operational by the year 2030.
This strategic railway development is anticipated to significantly reduce transportation times for freight, thereby enhancing trade efficiency between the participating nations and fostering stronger economic ties within the Greater Mekong subregion.
