Thailand's GL Series: A New Economic Opportunity Worth 2 Billion Baht
The rise of GIRL'S LOVE (GL) series presents substantial economic potential amid growing popularity in the Thai entertainment industry.
Thammasat University (TU) has highlighted significant opportunities for the Thai entertainment industry in developing content focused on GIRL'S LOVE (GL) series, also known as Yuri.
Over the past year, these series have gained rapid popularity in Thailand, ranking among the Top 10 most discussed online topics in mid-2024. Both small and large production companies are increasingly venturing into this market.
The university estimates that, with government recognition of GL content's potential to boost the entertainment sector and the economy, the GL series could generate economic value of up to 2 billion baht.
Professor Supasawat Chatchaval, President of Thammasat University, emphasized the institution's commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 5, focusing on gender equality.
The university aims to foster an inclusive society that ensures equitable participation in learning and development while promoting a friendly and non-discriminatory environment.
This initiative aligns with advocating for the rights of women and diverse gender identities to access resources equally, laying the foundation for a sustainable and equitable future.
Dr. Kiatthana Saisanan, a faculty member of TU’s Journalism and Mass Communication department, noted that over the past few years, GL series have steadily captured the interest of viewers intrigued by stories featuring romantic relationships between women.
Examples include productions like 'Club Friday The Series: Love Bully' and 'Heart Hidden Love,' which serve as tools for raising awareness of LGBTQ+ rights in contemporary society.
These GL series can portray love and acceptance in a manner free from stereotypes and tension, educating viewers on diverse perspectives of love.
The importance of GL series in promoting understanding of LGBTQ+ rights lies in their ability to reflect the reality of sexual expression within society, which sometimes faces limited acceptance or stigma.
These narratives exemplify that love between women is as natural as heterosexual love and that all individuals deserve respect and recognition.
Looking ahead, Dr. Kiatthana predicts a significant upward trend for GL series over the next three years, with continued interest and acceptance of diverse sexual content among audiences.
However, she also suggested that in five years, the landscape might shift as new trends emerge or narratives expand to explore facets of gender diversity that have yet to be examined.
Additionally, Dr. Kiatthana pointed out that the Thai media industry could effectively utilize GL series as a catalyst for promoting Thailand’s Soft Power through engaging and relatable storytelling.
Similar to how Korean series have thrived globally, Thai GL series can enhance international awareness of Thai culture, cuisine, and tourism.
They can seamlessly integrate local products, food, and beautiful tourist destinations, bolstering Thailand’s image as an inclusive and diverse country.
Director Thanywarin Sukkhapisit, a former Member of Parliament for the Move Forward Party, asserted that the trend of GL series is on track for continued growth, not only in Thailand but globally.
The increasing acceptance of GL narratives fosters a diverse fan base and broadening audience engagement.
As local support for GL content rises among producers and viewers, Thai GL content is attracting international discourse.
Thailand is positioned strongly to create and export GL series.
Unlike South Korea, which has extensive experience in generating globally successful series, and Japan, which consistently produces popular GL content, Thailand’s emerging entertainment market has distinct strengths.
With unique and quality content, Thailand could quickly ascend to prominence in the Yuri genre, promoting its cultural identity and diversity.
Thanywarin affirmed that Thailand leads the Asian market in GL series production.
The growing popularity and acceptance from domestic and international audiences showcase Thailand's potential to create quality content.
However, to maintain and sustainably develop this leadership, innovations in storytelling and production strategies are essential, alongside increased investment to enhance quality and depth of content.
Support from the government is crucial, recognizing and fostering the potential of GL content to enhance the entertainment industry and the economy.
Such investment serves as a vital factor in elevating industry standards and encouraging the creation of high-quality works.
Author Naruman Kalyanamitr, who writes Girls’ Love novels under the pen name Ma-Bung, noted that many beloved GL series derive from successful novels adapted for the screen.
While narratives might evolve to remain relevant, the captivating dynamics of character relationships and the exploration of love beyond gender continue to resonate.
Producers interested in adapting GL novels often seek works that align with their target audience, favoring popular market titles due to existing fanbases and positive reception, increasing the likelihood of successful adaptations.
While some may view the rise of GL series as a fleeting trend, the genre has consistently progressed.
The awareness sparked by earlier series like 'YES OR NO' and 'Hormones' established a foundation of understanding, which has since matured, with GL narratives now more widely accepted than ever.
The growth of GL series in Thailand positions it as a vital part of the nation’s entertainment landscape, connecting to broader themes of Soft Power on the global stage.
High-quality adaptations from popular GL novels allow the Thai entertainment industry to attract a wider audience while fostering an international fanbase.
Should Thailand successfully elevate production standards and expand market access to global platforms, GL series stand to transition from mere audience favorites to significant cultural exports, enhancing economic impact and providing international influence.
