Thailand's 'Y Series' Phenomenon Drives Entertainment Industry's International Growth

Thailand's 'Y Series' Phenomenon Drives Entertainment Industry's International Growth

The rising popularity of 'Y Series' propels Thailand's entertainment sector, projected to grow by 17% YoY by 2025
In the era of embracing equality and diversity, 'Y Series' has emerged as a significant cultural and business phenomenon both in Thailand and internationally.

Often focusing on same-sex relationships, these series, encompassing Boy Love (BL) and Girl Love (GL) narratives, have not only captivated Thai audiences but have also crossed borders to gain global prominence.

Originating from Japanese art forms such as Yaoi and Yuri that depict romantic tales between male and female characters respectively, 'Y Series' has evolved into a diverse media category.

With its ever-increasing fan base, it has become a significant catalyst for the expansion of Thailand's entertainment industry on the global stage.

Recent projections from SCB Economic Intelligence Center (SCB EIC) anticipate that the proportion of 'Y Series' within Thailand's media production value will rise from 0.7% in 2019 to approximately 3.9% by 2025.

This growth is expected to contribute significantly to a market value exceeding 4.9 billion THB, primarily driven by the proliferation of online streaming platforms like OTT, which have enhanced the accessibility of Thai media globally.

Thailand’s 'Y Series' has swiftly gained favor in various international markets through open portrayals of character relationships and innovative storytelling.

Key factors behind this trend include Thailand’s cultural openness to diverse gender identities and the ability to provide rich, novel content consistently.

The global streaming boom has also played a pivotal role, allowing Thai content to reach broader audiences effectively.

Statistics indicate that by 2024, Thai 'Y Series' will constitute more than half of all BL/GL content airing across Asia, with over 340 titles already released.

This burgeoning popularity presents numerous opportunities for ancillary businesses, including publishing, MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions), and advertising.

Popular Thai actors often become influencers with substantial followings, attracting attention from brands looking for ambassadors, further boosting economic opportunities tied to these series.

Moreover, the phenomenon has invigorated related sectors like tourism, as international fans flock to filming locations and events linked to their favorite series.

Despite its current momentum, the 'Y Series' industry faces ongoing challenges.

Continued innovation, understanding of diverse audience preferences, and maintaining cultural uniqueness are essential for sustaining growth and expanding into new markets.

Governmental support through tax incentives and global promotion initiatives could further bolster this sector’s international competitiveness, facilitating even broader dissemination and higher quality production standards.

As Thai 'Y Series' increasingly captures hearts worldwide, strategic policy actions could unlock further growth potential, strengthening the industry’s footprint on the global stage.
