Thailand, UK announce upgrading of relations to strategic partnership
Thailand and the UK have elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, signing an agreement on March 20.
Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton, UK Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs, visited Thailand and was met by Thailand’s Foreign Minister.
The discussions focused on trade, notably initiating the Thailand-UK Free Trade Agreement to enhance their trade partnership. The meeting, which included Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, also covered cooperation in security, science, technology, tourism, and education.
Particularly noteworthy was the topic of visa exemptions for Thai passport holders, reflecting Thailand's interest in boosting tourism by removing visa requirements.
The Srettha administration had earlier reported positive feedback from the EU on the potential Schengen visa waiver for Thais, following the visa exemption agreement with China, effective from March 1.
The meetings also covered global and regional issues, such as the Myanmar situation and the Russia-Ukraine conflict. The UK expressed support for Thailand's bid to join the OECD, an effort Thailand hopes will enhance its global economic reputation and attract further investment.
