TikTok Announces THB 300 Billion Investment in Thailand
The investment includes the establishment of a data hosting facility and aims to enhance Thailand's digital infrastructure.
Social media platform TikTok has pledged to invest over 300 billion baht in Thailand over the next five years, marking a noteworthy commitment to bolster the nation’s digital ecosystem.
The announcement was made during a meeting between TikTok's Vice President of Public Policy, Helena Lersch, and Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra at Government House in Bangkok on Friday.
Lersch expressed appreciation for the Thai government's investment-friendly policies, reinforcing TikTok's intention to work collaboratively with government authorities to accelerate digital transformation throughout Thailand.
The significant investment is positioned to enhance the country's technological infrastructure and aims to establish Thailand as a regional hub for technology.
The planned data hosting facility will primarily serve TikTok’s estimated 50 million users in Thailand and additional users across the ASEAN region.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn welcomed the investment, which has received preliminary approval from Thailand's Board of Investment (BOI), emphasizing that TikTok's commitment reflects strong confidence in Thailand’s capabilities as a digital marketplace.
During the meeting, she noted, 'TikTok’s investment signals to global investors that Thailand is an attractive destination for high-quality investment in the digital economy.'
Additionally, the discussions addressed online safety concerns, with an agreement to enhance bilateral cooperation on content moderation and initiatives aimed at improving digital literacy, particularly in combating misinformation and online scams.
The Prime Minister highlighted several strategic advantages that Thailand offers for digital investment, including its central geographical location in Southeast Asia, robust infrastructure, access to secure renewable energy sources, and a skilled labor force.
Prime Minister Paetongtarn also acknowledged TikTok’s influence in promoting Thai culture on a global scale, citing that the #Thailand hashtag featured in over 4 million posts last year, which notably contributed to the country's tourism sector.
In concluding remarks, she expressed optimism that 'TikTok's investment and innovation will not only strengthen Thailand's digital economy but will also create new opportunities for small entrepreneurs, content creators, and communities nationwide.'
The agreement symbolizes a significant advancement in public-private partnerships within Thailand's digital sector, highlighting a joint commitment to foster growth in the country's creative and technological industries.
