Tops Expands with New Branches in Southern Tourist Destinations

Retail chain aims to become Thailand's largest supermarket with strategic openings in Samui, Phangan, and Kamala.
Tops, the food business arm under Central Retail, is accelerating its expansion efforts in a stride towards becoming Thailand's largest supermarket chain.

The company unveiled three new branches in prime southern tourist locations: Heaven Samui in Surat Thani, Phangan in Surat Thani, and Kamala in Phuket, capitalizing on the high demand during Thailand's peak tourist season.

Stefan Cools, CEO of Central Retail's Food Group, stated, 'According to the latest statistics from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, international tourist numbers increased by 26% in 2024 compared to the previous year.

The Ministry of Tourism and Sports reports that southern Thailand generated approximately 660 billion baht in tourism revenue.'

The strategic openings are part of Tops' ambitious goal to extend its branch network to 1,000 by 2026. The new branches aim to serve both local and international tourists, ensuring economic and tourism growth while contributing to the community through employment opportunities, under the vision of being a 'Truly World-Class Omni-Channel Lifestyle Food Retailer.'

Historically, Tops has maintained branches in tourist hubs like Chiang Mai, Pattaya, Nakhon Si Thammarat, and Songkhla, totaling 28 locations.

The data indicates that these branches have seen an average 9% increase in customers, reflecting the tourism sector's recovery and growth trajectory anticipated in 2025.

Branch Highlights:

Heaven Samui Branch: Spanning 870 square meters within the new Heaven Samui community mall on Chaweng Beach, this branch is surrounded by over 50 hotels ranging from 3 to 5 stars, accommodating over 14,000 visitors daily within walking distance.

The branch offers a comprehensive shopping experience with 15,000 items, including imported produce, meats, ready-to-eat meals, snacks, baked goods, and beverages.

Phangan Branch: Situated along the main road connecting Rin Beach and Thong Sala Beach, and near more than 70 hotels, this 550-square-meter branch is the first to link these routes.

European tourists, making up 60% of visitors, will find a range of over 11,000 premium items and exclusive international products tailored to Western tastes alongside local Thai goods for souvenirs.

Kamala Branch in Phuket: As the first premium supermarket on Kamala Beach, this 950-square-meter branch caters to around 34,000 daily tourists in an area poised for luxury real estate development.

Offering over 17,000 items, including fresh produce, imported ingredients, and international brands, the branch enhances the shopping experience akin to a global retail environment.

Partner stores include McDonald’s, Fruit Fusion on The Go, King Kebab, Five Star Chicken, and a Money Exchange service.

Currently, Tops operates 16 branches in southern Thailand and remains committed to expanding in high-potential locations to meet shopper needs, establishing itself as a 'Food Discovery & Destination' in all key tourism areas.

Beyond business growth, Tops is committed to local community development through job creation and by promoting local and SME products, strengthening Thailand's economy.'"
