United States and Thailand Initiate Official Tariff Negotiations
US agrees to engage in formal discussions aimed at reducing trade tariffs with Thailand, as revealed by Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira.
The United States has officially agreed to commence negotiations concerning tariffs with Thailand, as confirmed by Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira.
This announcement was made via a video message posted on social media on June 8, 2025.
Finance Minister Pichai indicated that Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa had reported the US's formal response to Thailand's request, stating a willingness to engage in discussions regarding mutual trade and tariffs.
According to Mr. Pichai, informal discussions had already taken place between the two countries, and he expressed confidence that the proposals presented by Thailand would be beneficial for both parties.
The Finance Minister emphasized that the negotiations were not starting from scratch, noting that substantial dialogue had occurred in prior meetings among Thai officials.
He committed to providing updates on the progress of the forthcoming official negotiations.
Details regarding the timeline for the beginning of these negotiations have not yet been disclosed.
Currently, Thailand faces a 36% tariff imposed by the US, which could become effective if an agreement is not reached before the moratorium on the tariff expires in July.
