Thailand and China Strengthen Crackdown on Transnational Scams
Officials discuss regional cooperation against border crime amid reports of scam operations relocating to Cambodia.
Thailand has reaffirmed its commitment to combating transnational crime, particularly call-center scams, during a meeting between Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa and Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong at the ASEAN Future Forum 2025 in Hanoi, Vietnam.
Sun emphasized that Thailand’s participation in the forum would encourage Myanmar and other affected nations to take stronger action against cross-border fraud operations.
The meeting follows China's tripartite crackdown on scam networks along Myanmar's border, triggered by reports that a Chinese actor had been kidnapped and trafficked through Thailand to a scam compound.
In response, Thailand agreed to cooperate by cutting power and internet access to five Myanmar border areas, leading to the arrest of thousands of scam-compound workers by Myanmar’s military.
Many of the detained individuals have reported being subjected to torture while being forced to participate in fraud operations.
Regional governments are exploring additional measures to combat transnational crime, including utilizing the Mekong-Lancang Cooperation (MLC) framework.
China, which will chair an upcoming MLC meeting later this year, plans to push for further collaboration on security issues.
Maris also met with Cambodian Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn to discuss reports that Chinese syndicates operating scam networks are relocating to Cambodia's border with Thailand.
The two ministers also reviewed preparations for an upcoming visit by Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to Cambodia.
Additionally, discussions included plans to resume negotiations on a long-standing territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia in the Gulf of Thailand.
