Manila urges restraint and dialogue as tensions prompt regional diplomatic attention
The Philippines, serving as this year’s chair of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, has said it is closely monitoring recent developments along the Cambodia–Thailand border and is encouraging both sides to exercise restraint and resolve differences through dialogue.
In a statement issued by the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila, the Philippine government emphasised ASEAN’s long-standing commitment to peaceful dispute resolution and regional stability.
As chair, the Philippines said it stands ready to facilitate communication if requested by the parties concerned, while expressing confidence in the ability of both Cambodia and Thailand to manage the situation through established bilateral mechanisms.
The border area has periodically experienced tension linked to overlapping territorial claims and localised security incidents.
Recent reports of increased military presence and heightened alert levels have drawn attention within the region, although neither government has announced large-scale escalation.
Officials in Bangkok have reiterated Thailand’s commitment to safeguarding sovereignty while maintaining open channels with Phnom Penh.
Cambodian authorities have similarly signalled their preference for diplomatic engagement.
Regional analysts note that ASEAN traditionally adopts a cautious approach in such matters, prioritising quiet diplomacy and consensus-building among member states.
The Philippines’ statement reflects that approach, underscoring the importance of preventing misunderstandings and ensuring that communication remains active at all levels.
The chair’s involvement highlights the broader regional interest in maintaining stability along shared borders, particularly as Southeast Asia navigates complex geopolitical and economic challenges.
For now, ASEAN is observing developments while encouraging continued dialogue between Cambodia and Thailand to avoid further strain on bilateral ties.
