High schools under the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) have pledged to become smoke-free and vape-free institutions.
This campaign, organized with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (THPF), aims to raise awareness about the dangers of smoking and vaping, particularly among youth.
The initiative coincides with World Anti-Drug Day on June 26 and includes exhibitions and discussions at Bangkok City Hall, focusing on the harmful effects of cigarettes and e-cigarettes.
Data reveals that 17% of students aged 13-15 have tried e-cigarettes.
These devices are often seen as a gateway to other drug use, posing significant health risks, including damage to the brain, lungs, and cardiovascular system.
Secondhand vapor from e-cigarettes is also harmful, increasing the risk of bronchitis.
A survey by the Department of Juvenile Observation and Protection found high rates of cigarette and e-cigarette use among youth in detention centers.
The event also declared BMA-affiliated schools as smoke-free and drug-free zones, with representatives from over 100 schools participating.
