Bangkok has emerged as the top city for Lunar New Year celebrations, with Thailand following Japan as a preferred destination, according to Agoda's booking data.
China rejoins the top-five source markets for Thailand for the first time since 2019. Other key inbound markets include Malaysia, China, South Korea, Singapore, and Japan, with Bangkok, Phuket, Hat Yai, Pattaya, and Chiang Mai being the hottest spots in Thailand.
Lunar New Year, primarily observed on February 10, 2024, extends to a long weekend or even a week in various Asian countries. After a hiatus, China climbs back as the third major source market and a significant contributor to tourism in Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Thailand, and Vietnam.
Thai tourists are also jetting off to international hotspots such as Japan, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong, and Vietnam, favoring cities like Tokyo, Taipei, Seoul, Osaka, and Hong Kong.
Agoda’s Enric Casals notes the period's importance for travel, mentioning that diverse visa policies and incentives since 2019 have made destinations more attractive and less dependent on specific markets, with a special nod to the anticipated return of Chinese tourists.
Regionally, travelers predominantly come from South Korea, Singapore, China, Hong Kong, and Japan, heading to Japan, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, and Vietnam. These markets offer a blend of culture and leisure, with cities like Bangkok, Tokyo, Seoul, and Osaka showcasing the region's urban and cultural appeal.
