Bangkok to unveil covered walkway between Lumpini and Chong Nonsi stations by end-2025
BMA confirms South Sathorn covered walkway spanning 1.6km with revised design, lighting, roofing, and underground power ducts; scheduled for completion in September through December 2025.
The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration is advancing construction of a covered walkway linking Lumpini MRT station and the Chong Nonsi Skywalk, promising completion by the end of 2025.
Bangkok’s governor, Chadchart Sittipunt, visited the site on September 3 to inspect progress, stating the project aims to enhance pedestrian comfort and connectivity in line with the city’s smart-city ambitions.
The walkway, stretching approximately 1.6 kilometres along South Sathorn Road, will include roofing and lighting to protect pedestrians from rain and sun.
These components are slated for completion in September 2025.
Following this, the Metropolitan Electricity Authority will install underground power ducts, and sidewalks will be upgraded to meet safety and convenience standards by year’s end.
Design modifications have been made to circumvent existing power poles, which are being removed once underground cabling is in place; those areas will be restored later to the original design.
The project is managed by the Public Works Department in collaboration with the Urban Design and Development Centre and other local institutions.
The budget is about twenty-point five million baht, and the tender contract began in September 2024 with an initial completion target in March 2025 for the core structure, though ancillary work will continue through late 2025.
Officials emphasise that all sidewalks, lighting systems, and structural modifications must comply with universal design principles.
Pedestrian needs—especially for office workers and residents in nearby condominiums—are central.
The design alteration aims to ensure continuous protected walkways, even as utility works proceed.
Once finished, this walkway is expected to become a model for future pedestrian infrastructure projects under Bangkok’s ongoing efforts to create a more walkable city.
