Chiang Mai Aims to Secure UNESCO World Heritage Status by 2026
Thai city seeks recognition for its rich historical and cultural significance.
The government of Chiang Mai is planning to nominate the northern Thai city as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2026, coinciding with its 730th anniversary.
The nomination dossier, which has been under development since 2015, focuses on seven significant historical sites that embody the city's cultural heritage and universal value.The locations highlighted in the dossier include Wat Chiang Man, Wat Jedi Luang, Wat Phra Singha, Wat Jet Yot, Wat Suan Dok, Wat U-Mong, Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep, as well as the city walls and moat.
The preparation of this extensive documentation is expected to be completed by August 2026 for submission to UNESCO's General Conference that year.Culture Minister Sudawan Wangsuphakijkosol emphasizes Chiang Mai's historical importance as the former capital of the Lanna Kingdom, noting its expansive history spanning 730 years.
This period encompasses various archaeological sites and cultural attractions that are expected to contribute to the city's successful nomination.
