The Education Ministry of Thailand plans to request a 15-billion-baht budget to provide electronic devices such as iPads, tablets, and laptops to 600,000 students and teachers beginning next year.
Ministry spokesman Siripong Angkasakulkiat confirmed that they have contacted the Digital Economy and Society Ministry to determine the types of devices to be included in this initiative.
The devices will be distributed during the pilot stage starting next year, and will include a sim card and internet service.
The project aims to enter the new digital era by allowing electronics companies to supply the devices on a competitive basis, though inappropriate and gaming sites will be blocked.
Education Minister Pol Gen Permpoon Chidchob emphasized the need for the devices to be practical and widely accepted.
Students will need to return the devices after finishing school, and the initiative initially targets Mathayom 4-6 students at leading schools, with wider rollout in subsequent stages.
Additional efforts are underway to prepare learning content for various platforms to enhance flexible learning options.
