Deputy Prime Minister and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit has directed all agencies to ensure that future electric train networks outside Bangkok do not affect important historical sites.
The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) plans to build electric rail networks in cities like Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phuket, and Phitsanulok at a combined cost of 77 billion baht.
A proposed 30 billion baht network in Chiang Mai raised concerns about its impact on historical sites.
To mitigate this, Mr. Suriya suggested parts of the line in the Old City area be built underground.
The 15.8-kilometer line will run from Nakornping Hospital in Mae Rim district to Mae Hia-Samakki Intersection, featuring 16 stations and two park-and-ride facilities.
An environmental impact assessment must be completed before construction can begin, with the project expected to start in 2028 and become operational by 2031.
