Myanmar Permits Annual Import of Electric Vehicles Tied to Foreign Remittance
Myanmar nationals can import an EV based on overseas remittances exceeding $50,000
Myanmar has introduced a policy allowing its nationals to import one electric vehicle (EV) annually, contingent on foreign remittances.
Myanmar citizens working abroad, including seafarers with regular salaries, who remit over $200,000 annually are eligible to import a vehicle worth up to 5% of their remitted amount.
Similarly, individuals with non-salary income transferring over $50,000 in a year can import an electric car or motorcycle, maintaining the same 5% value limitation.
The new initiative, announced by the Myanmar Embassy in Bangkok, specifies that the importation can occur via individual or combined remittances if a single transaction does not meet the total vehicle value.
The Central Bank of Myanmar's website serves as a resource for eligible Myanmar workers, providing information on salary transfer rates, lists of authorized banks and remittance services, and associated international organizations facilitating foreign exchanges.
The embassy emphasizes that these banks offer competitive remittance service fees, supporting Myanmar nationals abroad.
